#1 – Put yourself out there.

The first thing anyone who works with celebrities knows is that you’ve got to make connections. In the film and television industry as well as the fashion industry and even Broadway theater — everyone knows each other. And you’ve got to be one of those people who’s “in the know.”

This means putting yourself out there. Attend industry-related events, and go to any celebrity-related function you have the opportunity to. At school, be sure to take any and all opportunities to work in fashion, TV, film, or live theater. In the end, the connections you make now will pay off.

#2 – If necessary, take jobs for free.

Your ultimate goal should be to get some celebrity experience in your portfolio. You need that experience if you want to gain additional celebs as your paying clients. But to accomplish this, you will need to know people who know celebrities, and that may mean working for free occasionally.

Long-term, it would of course be unsustainable to work for free. But for now, while you’re just starting out and don’t yet have a portfolio to speak of, you may have to work without a paycheck. Most people know the importance of marketing, but they don’t take the time to actually do it for themselves. Avoid this error! Marketing yourself properly — online, especially — is one of the keys to success in this industry.

Start an Instagram where you show your work. Get a Twitter account and follow famous artists and celebs. Start your own website. It’s all important.
