Meet Breana
This week we are excited to feature Miss Breana Hume! Breana is our pink haired sprite full of energy, who will be very soon graduating from our Esthetics program and taking over the world! We first met Breana during a NYIB Make Up Team fashion show in Manhattan, and lucky for us she decided to join our school’s Esthetics licensing program!
NYIB: Hi Breana! I am so excited to interview you today 🙂. Tell us a little about yourself!
Breana: Oh no, I hate this question. I never know what to say, haha! What do you want to know?
NYIB: Anything! Just give us a little snippet of all that is Breana Hume!
Breana: Okay. I am a Breana. Insert cheesy smile. I am 21. And I am here. Doing big things!
NYIB: Haha, I will take it! Okay, so Breana what drew you to the Beauty industry?
Breana: So, this story is sort of weird to tell, but it all started with Dior. I was home one night, having a bit of a Netflix binge, and I was watching this documentary called “Dior and I.” It was all about their 2002 Spring collection, with Raf Simons, and it was beautiful. It was full of flowers, and stunning, and I said “Ooh, I like this! I want to do makeup!” So, then I decided to enroll in Make-Up Designory. Which then led me here.
NYIB: See people, Netflix isn’t just for lazy people! It helps us choose career paths! So, you actually went to MUD in the city first?
Breana: Yep, I did their Multimedia program. Some special effects, print work, it was a lot!
NYIB: How did you go from their incredible program, to joining our school?
Breana: Well, NYIB is a partner school with Make-Up Designory. So, I had heard about your school while a student there, and ended up joining the NYIB Make Up Team. I came to a couple shows, and I just loved everything about it. I loved the shows, the team, the people. Finally, one of the makeup artists who was a graduate from here told me I should go to Esthetics school and full force make a career in beauty. And I knew she was right, so I called you up, booked my tour with Megan, and started right away.
NYIB: Yes you did! I think you came in to tour and started the very next month! Was there anything in particular that made you decide to choose our school for licensing?
Breana: I just loved all of you guys. Everyone here is warm, friendly, funny. That alone was enough for me.
NYIB: I know since beginning the Esthetics program, you have still attended a ton with the NYIB Make Up team. What kinds of shows have you done so far with the us?
Breana: Everything. I’ve done charity, men’s fashion, women’s fashion week. A lot of stuff. And I can’t wait to do more and keep building.
NYIB: Before you began MUD and decided to get into this industry, what else were you doing? Besides obviously watching Netflix documentaries 😉
Breana: I went to college for a bit for Marine Biology. But, I hated not being home, so I only stayed for one semester. When I got home, I was just working, trying to figure it out. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, but I wasn’t doing much. I just didn’t have direction. Until that Dior doc!
NYIB: Well, I will forever be grateful that you ended finding direction that led you toward us! You have been here a while, and you are getting so close to graduating soon! What so far has been the most interesting thing you have learned?
Breana: I love science, so being able to learn more about the skin and ingredients, and how they all react, is great. I really love facials, so learning how to do all different kinds has been cool. OH! And high frequency is my jam! I bought a High Frequency machine for Christmas because I just needed one for myself.
NYIB: Ooh, I have one too! Neon or Argon?
Breana: Ahh pressure, uhh. Oh no!
NYIB: Haha it’s okay, it’s okay. Purple or orange?
Breana: Orange!
NYIB: Neon! I have that one too. It’s amazing.
(Side note- High Frequency machines use a combination of mild electrical currents and gas to treat different skin conditions. They are either filled with Argon (purple) or Neon (orange) gas, hence my question of purple or orange! Here at New York Institute of Beauty, high frequency is one of the many skin treatments and machines we educate our students on using in clinic!)
NYIB: What are some of your goals for after you graduate from here?
Breana: More pressure, Megan! Well, obviously get an amazing job of course! I want to eventually live in the city full time. I want to do everything. I want to work in a spa doing all kinds of facials, and do makeup on the weekends.
I also would love to someday be a teacher. Maybe in a New York Institute of Beauty Manhattan school if we open any more locations! Want to stay in the NYIB family!
NYIB: That would be amazing. I love hearing our students say they want to stay in the NYIB family. So many of our staff members are graduates as well, I think it creates a really wonderful environment here.
NYIB: Last question Breana- any advice or words of encouragement that you’d like to share?
Breana: Just do it. Nike style. Take advantage of everything, Free classes, workshops, participate in shows. Just build up your experience. There is so much you can learn.
I want to thank Breana for her time. If you needed any more indication of how amazing she is, just check out that picture! Be on the lookout for Breana to join us this February at New York Fashion Week showing off more of her incredible skills, and continuing on as a valued member of our NYIB Make Up Team!
