Giving Back During COVID-19

During the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, much of New York City and the surrounding area began to shut down. The New York Institute of Beauty canceled in-person classes, and like many other schools across the country, transitioned to a remote learning format.

Despite the fact that everything about normal life was changing instantly and the world seemed to be swirling in chaos, the New York Institute of Beauty as well as other surrounding businesses got to work giving back. These business leaders recognized the unique needs of the community during this unprecedented moment, and they strived to make a difference.

Here’s a look at how the New York Institute of Beauty and other local businesses gave back during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic:

New York Institute of Beauty Donated Personal Protective Equipment to Local Hospitals

As the realities of the COVID-19 pandemic became apparent, the students and staff members at the New York Institute of Beauty took action to help those who were working on the front lines at local hospitals. The New York Institute of Beauty donated gloves, masks, lip balms, and hand sanitizer to StonyBrook and Good Samaritan hospitals in order to provide front line workers with the safety equipment that they needed while on the job.

New York Institute of Beauty Partnered with Les Downtown to Sew Masks for Essential Workers

Les Downtown (@lesdowntown) and the New York Institute of Beauty came together to make sure that essential workers had the masks they needed in order to get to and from work safely each day. Les Downtown worked to pick up and drop off donated material that would be used for the masks. The New York Institute of Beauty recruited students, seamstresses and tailors to sew the masks from the donated materials.

New York Institute of Beauty Helped Give Nurses Stays at Local Bed and Breakfasts

Recognizing that nurses were both mentally and physically exhausted by the rigors of their job during the pandemic, the New York Institute of Beauty worked to nominate nurses for stays at local B&Bs such as the White Fences Inn, Watermill. In fact, a New York Institute of Beauty graduate was nominated and won a stay at one of the B&Bs. In addition, Revision Skincare donated products to the New York Institute of Beauty that were then used to create care packages for the nurses during their stays.

Brandon Gregory (@Bg3dimensions), a 16-year-old student, used his 3D printer at home to create more than 2,000 face shields for front line workers. He also created and donated more than 800 ear savers for workers who had to wear masks while on the job.
