When thinking of a beauty school like the New York Institute of Beauty, you may not realize how many opportunities the different programs offer. NYIB caught up with alumna Samantha Piazza to discuss her experience with the specialty course, Oncology Spa Solutions. During her interview for Esthetics, Samantha learned about the specialty class, which encouraged her to pursue her enrollment at NYIB. Like many others, Samantha had lost a loved one to cancer and wanted to find ways to help patients who were struggling with the disease.
The Oncology Spa Solutions is a 12-hour virtual course that provides a comprehensive look at what role an esthetician will play in the care of an oncology patient. Samantha felt the staff teaching the class were friendly and thorough. She particularly appreciated how each teacher encouraged the students to succeed and aided them in reaching their goals. Although she gained a wealth of knowledge through all the course sections, Samantha felt she learned the most about techniques for facials done on patients in remission. Students were taught thoroughly on what modifications are needed to protect a client’s health. The esthetician’s goal while working with oncology patients is to improve their overall quality of life.
When asked if lessons were easy to understand, Samantha wholeheartedly agreed. According to her, “There are so many different cancers, and this class helped me understand what the proper treatments would entail.” Oncology treatments can affect the skin in many ways, and course attendees learn what products to use on compromised skin. Estheticians must completely customize skincare for each client to reduce skin-related side effects.
Samantha also appreciated the moments where the instructors encouraged the students to remember the importance of what they were doing. During sharing circles, Samantha felt motivated and emotional.
The course emphasizes what a positive impact an esthetician can make on the lives of cancer patients and their families. Qualified estheticians may establish long-term relationships with medical professionals, including hospitals and physicians.
When asked if she’d recommend the class to others, Samantha stated, “I feel every esthetician should be knowledgeable about this information in the course because it will help them dig deeper and connect with a client. They also must be knowledgeable on the modifications needed to continue treatment without further potential health concerns from using the wrong ingredients or application techniques.”
Working with Oncology clients can be a very rewarding career. Helping clients look and feel their best at probably their worst times is definitely rewarding.
