Although these interviews are similar to the in-person experience, there are key differences that make it important for job seekers to prepare accordingly. Below are some tips to help you ace your next virtual interview.
1. Prepare in advance.
Before the day of the interview, take some time to learn about the prospective employer. Be sure to read about their history, products and other important characteristics. If possible, research their typical employees as well so you can understand the qualities that will be considered most important.
2. Practice.
Most interviews involve similar questions. Practice your answers to these questions in advance so you will be more prepared when the day of the interview arrives. During the interview, keep your resume close by so you can refer to it if you have any questions.
3. Prepare the interview area.
Unlike an in-person interview, a virtual interview requires you to allow the interviewer to get a glimpse of your home environment. Before your interview, take some time to set the scene. Be sure to remove any clutter or decor that would be distracting or embarrassing during the meeting. Pay careful attention to the lighting as well. If possible, find a location with plenty of natural light.
Some job applicants may not have a suitable location for interviews. If you cannot find a good space in your home, consider purchasing a photography backdrop.
4. Keep it quiet.
During the interview, you will need the space to be quiet so you can hold a productive conversation. If you have pets, make sure they are in other parts of your home where they won’t be able to disrupt you. If possible, ask anyone else who lives in your home to leave temporarily while you are involved in the interview.
5. Set up early.
Technology can be tricky. To ensure that you don’t have any problems with the interview because of technical difficulties, practice with the required technology in advance. On the day of the interview, begin setting everything up early so you will have plenty of time to deal with any problems that may arise.
6. Dress appropriately.
Even though you may be participating in the interview from your home, it is still important to look professional. Choose attire that you would wear to an in-person interview. For women, hair and makeup should be styled to match the company aesthetic. Men should be clean and neatly groomed as well.
7. Relax.
Having an interview from home can be stressful. By preparing well in advance, you can eliminate some of the anxiety so you can be as relaxed as possible. When the time of the scheduled interview arrives, remember to speak clearly and do your best.
After your meeting is complete, remember to send a “thank you” email to the interviewer. If you haven’t heard back from the interviewer after one or two weeks, consider sending a follow-up email to check in.
