Here at the New York Institute of Beauty, we believe strongly in the importance of giving back to the community. Our caring and compassionate students have seen first-hand just how rewarding and fulfilling it can be to voluntarily share our services and skills with people in need, such as when we recently participated in the Stony Book Children’s Hospital Prom event. Here, our team provided free hair and makeup services to teens who were battling serious illnesses and thus unable to attend their own proms. We firmly believe that anybody capable of providing a professional service should make it a point to give back to their communities, as doing so can be rewarding both personally and professionally.

Lets You Share and Sharpen Skills

First of all, when you volunteer to share your skills or services with others in need, you typically get to enjoy a setting in which to sharpen and practice your skills. This remains true regardless of your specific skill or service. Volunteering keeps you relevant to your trade and also gives you an opportunity to learn or practice newer techniques, potentially learning new skills from other volunteers along the way. And what’s not to love about that?

Good for the Mind and Body

It’s no secret that volunteering is also beneficial to the mind and body. For example, volunteering can help to reduce or counteract feelings of stress, anxiety, and anger — in addition to combating depression. Not to mention, knowing that you’re doing good for the community and that others in need are benefiting from your services can be a great confidence boost, providing you with a greater sense of pride in what you do.

Helps You Connect With Others

One of our favorite things about volunteering is the people it allows us meet. When volunteering, one is able to connect more strongly to the community. Not to mention, depending on where you volunteer and what you do, it may also help to make new friends, and expand your network. At the same time, volunteering tends to be a very social act, so the act itself is great for better developing social skills (which can in turn help you in your career). It’s a win-win for all involved!

Enjoy a New Sense of Achievement

When you take time out of your life to volunteer and help others, you see first-hand just how wonderful the efforts can affect others. As a result, you get to experience an empowering sense of achievement that you simply don’t get out of your everyday work.

These are just a few of the personal and professional benefits you can enjoy when you give back to your community through volunteering. It doesn’t matter the occupation you practice, there are always ways to get involved. By simply having a portfolio for makeup, you could easily join the NYIB Makeup Team.
