When Melissa O'Dea enrolled at the New York Institute of Beauty, she was searching for more than a career—she was searching for a way to help others experience the confidence she had fought to regain herself. Today, the NYIB graduate and owner of Skincerity Studio has been recognized as the Long Island Beauty Awards' Facialist of the Year. We caught up with Melissa to talk about her journey, the lessons she learned at NYIB, and the passion that continues to drive her every day.
Congratulations on your Long Island Beauty Award! What does receiving this recognition mean to you, both personally and professionally?
Receiving the Long Island Beauty Award for Best Facialist feels incredibly surreal and deeply meaningful because it represents so much more than professional recognition—it represents finding my purpose.
If someone had told me a few years ago that I'd be standing here after everything I've been through—personally and professionally—I'm not sure I would have believed them.
My journey into skincare wasn't just about finding a career; it was personal. I struggled with severe cystic acne throughout my twenties, and I know firsthand how deeply skin can affect your confidence and the way you see yourself. That experience completely changed the direction of my life. What started as a passion for makeup evolved into a passion for understanding skin, helping others heal, and giving people back the confidence they deserve.
Personally, this award reminds me that taking a leap of faith, trusting yourself, and following your passion is always worth it, even when the path feels uncertain. Receiving this recognition during such a transformative chapter of my life makes it even more meaningful.
Professionally, earning the Best Facialist award is incredibly humbling because it represents the trust my clients have placed in me and the support of this amazing industry. Every person who has sat in my treatment room has become part of my journey, and I'm grateful for each and every one of them. I've always believed that skincare is about so much more than treating the skin—it's about helping people feel confident, cared for, and comfortable in their own skin.
Receiving this award reminds me why I chose this profession in the first place. It motivates me to continue learning, growing, and providing the best possible care while building meaningful relationships with every client I have the privilege of treating.
Looking back at your time at NYIB, is there a class, instructor, or experience that helped shape the beauty professional you are today?
One of the greatest things NYIB gave me was confidence. It provided the foundation that allowed me to turn a passion into a career while introducing me to instructors who genuinely cared and wanted to see their students succeed.
I especially have to recognize Ms. Angela, whose passion for education and incredible depth of knowledge left a lasting impression on me. She had a way of teaching that made you want to learn more, think deeper, and truly understand the science behind what we were doing. She encouraged curiosity, critical thinking, and always striving to be better—qualities that have stayed with me throughout my career.
Years later, I still find myself thinking back to lessons she taught in the classroom. That speaks volumes about the kind of educator she is and the impact she's had on so many students, myself included.
Another part of my journey that I'm proud of is that I didn't enter this industry right out of high school. I found esthetics later in life, and looking back, I truly believe that happened exactly when it was supposed to. The life experiences I had before beauty school gave me a different perspective, a deeper sense of empathy, and an appreciation for the trust my clients place in me every day. It's proof that it's never too late to pursue something you're passionate about.
My journey into esthetics was very personal. I struggled with severe cystic acne throughout my twenties, and after years of trying to find solutions, I became fascinated by skincare and the science behind it. Before that, I always loved makeup and the beauty industry, but my own skin journey completely shifted my passion toward helping others overcome the same struggles.
NYIB gave me the knowledge and confidence to begin my career, but it also taught me that this industry is one of lifelong learning. That mindset has stayed with me throughout my career and continues to inspire me to pursue advanced education, stay current with the latest innovations in skincare, and always provide the highest level of care for my clients.
What accomplishment in your career are you most proud of since starting your career?
Without a doubt, opening Skincerity Studio is the accomplishment I'm most proud of.
The Long Island Beauty Award was an incredible honor and something I'll always be grateful for, but building something from the ground up that reflects my values, my vision, and the way I want to care for people is something that's deeply personal to me.
After graduating from NYIB, I had the opportunity to spend over two years working in a medical aesthetics practice where I received invaluable hands-on training alongside incredibly talented providers. During that time, I expanded my knowledge of corrective skincare and advanced aesthetic treatments while treating a wide variety of skin concerns. I had the privilege of helping hundreds of clients with concerns ranging from acne and pigmentation to aging skin, and every treatment reinforced my belief that no two people—and no two treatment plans—are ever the same.
That experience gave me the confidence and clinical foundation to take the leap and build something that truly reflected my philosophy of care.
Opening Skincerity Studio wasn't simply about becoming a business owner—it was about creating the kind of experience I had always envisioned for my clients. I wanted every person who walked through my door to feel like they weren't just another appointment, but someone who was genuinely seen, heard, educated, and cared for. I wanted the freedom to truly customize every treatment and build lasting relationships with my clients while helping them achieve healthy, confident skin.
Watching that dream become a reality has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. There were moments when opening my own studio felt intimidating and uncertain, but trusting myself has been one of the best decisions I've ever made. Seeing clients walk through my doors and knowing they're experiencing something I built with so much heart reminds me every day why I chose this profession.
Every late night, every class, every training, every challenge, and every leap of faith has led me to this moment. Looking back, it's amazing to realize that what began as my own search for healthier skin and renewed confidence became the passion that's now allowed me to help others feel comfortable, confident, and beautiful in their own skin.
I'm incredibly proud of how far I've come, but I truly believe this is only the beginning.
What advice would you give someone who is thinking about starting a career in the beauty industry?
Go into this industry because you genuinely love helping people. Trends, products, and treatments will always evolve, but your passion, integrity, and willingness to continue learning are what will set you apart.
Never stop educating yourself. The beauty industry is constantly changing, and the best professionals are the ones who stay curious, embrace new knowledge, and continue growing throughout their careers.
Most importantly, don't compare your journey to anyone else's. Success doesn't happen overnight, and everyone's path looks different. Stay consistent, trust the process, and don't be afraid to take chances on yourself—even if you're starting later than you expected.
Remember that every client interaction is an opportunity to make someone feel better about themselves. Healthy skin is important, but helping someone regain their confidence is what truly makes this career so rewarding. If you lead with kindness, authenticity, and a genuine desire to help others, success will follow.
What's next for you? Are there any goals, dreams, or exciting projects you're working toward that you'd like to share?
I'm currently in one of the most exciting chapters of my career as I've officially opened my own private practice, Skincerity Studio.
My vision has always been to create a space where clients feel welcomed, comfortable, and genuinely cared for while receiving customized, results-driven treatments tailored specifically to their skin goals. The experience I've gained throughout my career, especially in medical aesthetics, continues to influence the level of care I strive to provide every single day.
As the studio continues to grow, I'm excited to expand my treatment offerings with advanced technologies, continue investing in education, and stay at the forefront of innovation within the skincare industry.
Ultimately, my biggest goal isn't simply to grow a successful business—it's to build something people genuinely trust. I want Skincerity Studio to be known as a place where clients don't just come for healthier skin, but where they know they'll be listened to, educated, supported, and treated with compassion.
If I can help someone leave feeling more confident than when they walked in, then I know I'm doing exactly what I was meant to do.
A few years ago, this was just a dream. Today, I'm incredibly grateful to be living it. I'm excited to continue growing, giving back to this industry that has given me so much, and hopefully inspiring others to believe that it's never too late to pursue the career you're meant for.
