Runway models showcased fierce new trends at last week’s New York Fashion Week. Practice up and coming makeup styles to revamp your look for fall and winter 2016.

Our Favorite New York Fashion Week Makeup Trends

1. Jewel Tone Lip Colors – Along with the grungy runway fashion, dark makeup was huge. We loved the jewel toned lip looks in particular. Wine and berry colors add visual interest and turn your lips into a major wow factor that’s perfect for the season. Simply by replacing your cherry red with a rich plum, you can look relevant this fall/winter. Want to really goth things up? Go for matte black lips a la Hot Topic.

2. Heavy eyeliner – Eyeliner is going back a decade, to the early 2000’s heavy-handed charcoal drawn on the lash and water lines. Keep it clean in the day, then use your fingers to smudge the lines a little for a messy yet chic night out look. Black is a classic eyeliner color for this trend, but you can also pick a colored eyeliner and use the same technique. If you’re choosing color, go with one that flatters your eye hue and add a little shimmer.

3. Spider Lash mascara – Thick, black mascara is still in for 2016 yet with a twist: The clumps you’ve spent your life trying to banish are now super on trend. To update the basic look, clump lashes together for a disorganized mascara look by using a special thick mascara, which is designed to clump naturally. Or apply several layers of your favorite mascara with an intentionally thick hand and allow things to smudge. This look may not be the most professional, but it’s the perfect bold date night eye look.

4. Glitter – Another throwback we’re psyched to see is glitter makeup. Our favorite look on the runway was glitter eyeshadow, perhaps a nod to the late David Bowie. Pick a metallic glitter or a color that complements your eyes. Apply with a light hand for a professional look or really go thick for a fun and flirty weekend style. You can also splash glitter on your lips or cheeks, or anywhere that fancy strikes you. Glitter was so creatively on display at the Saint Laurent runway show and the Burberry men’s show, which modeled glitter tears as a direct Bowie tribute.

5. Light smoky eyes – Smoky eyes are still on trend, but the style is changing for fall/winter 2016. Expect a lighter palette and application of the smoky eye style. Switch out the colors you are using in your smoky eye or play with the shape to keep this makeup staple looking relevant. One favorite tweak is the cat eye/smoky eye mash up, where you keep the shape of the cat eye and its trailing liner and apply the smoky eye technique with your shadow.
