Professional makeup artists must have a wide range of essential products and tools in their on-the-go kits. While it may take you a while to ultimately achieve the “perfect” kit for your trade, it’s important to understand the scope of what you’ll need from the start so you can start accumulating the necessities.

To start outfitting your professional makeup artist kit, you can use the following outline of products as a guiding template.

1. Face Prep Products

To prepare someone’s face for makeup, you’ll need several essential products, including:

  • Makeup remover/ exfoliating wipes and/ or micellar water and cotton rounds (when clients arrive with makeup already on)
  • Moisturizer/ Toners
  • Face primer for a smooth “canvas”
  • Eyeshadow primer

2. Essential Brushes, Tools, and Cleanup Products

Before applying actual makeup to your client’s face, it’s important to have your “tools of the trade” clean and and prepped. This includes:

  • Makeup brushes for proper application of each product
  • Brush Cleaner/ 70% Isopropyl alcohol to clean and sanitize your products and tools.
  • Spoolie brushes (for clean application of mascara and brow maintenance)
  • Disposables
  • An eyelash curler
  • Tweezers for possible brow touch-ups
  • Hand sanitizer, Wet wipes for clean hands and utensil handles
  • Cotton swabs
  • Tissues

3. Flawless Skin Makeup

After skin prep, your next step is to lay a flawless foundation for the facial skin itself. You’ll need:

  • Color-correcting concealer
  • Standard concealer palette
  • Under-eye concealers
  • A set of foundations

4. Blush and Contour Makeup

To accentuate the cheekbones, contour the structure of the face, and add color, you’ll need a selection of the following, suitable for a range of skin tones:

  • Blushes
  • Contour and highlighter products
  • Bronzer

5. Eye, Brow, and Lip Makeup

As you start in on the eyes, brows, and lips, make sure you have:

  • Eye products (pencil and liquid, gel or cake liners, shadow palettes, and mascaras)
  • False lashes, lash glue, glitter should be included in your kit
  • Brow products (powder, pencil, and/or pomade, plus brow setting gel)
  • Lip products (lip liner, lipstick, lip balm, lip stain, and/or lip gloss)

6. Final Touch Products

To ensure a good set, you’ll want to have the following products for “finishing touches”:

  • Loose setting powder
  • Setting spray

7. Other Essential Tools:

Here are some simple tools that are an absolute essential for your kit

  • Sharpener
  • Scissor
  • Palette/ Palette Knife
  • Hand Mirror
  • Extra Brush Sets
  • Cape

8. Extras:

These extras are are a good idea to have stapled to your kit. You can really save the day by carrying some of these items!

  • Eye Drops
  • Clear Nail polish/ Nail Kit
  • Safety Pins, Straight Pins, Bobby Pins
  • Baby Oil
  • Hand Lotion
  • Breath Mints
  • Zip Locks
