New York Fashion Week isn’t for the faint of heart. Not only do you need to have the talent and drive to work backstage, you must remain the utmost professional at all times. Working at NYFW opens so many doors for your beauty career. If you’re one of the lucky selected to work backstage at NYFW, the following are the top three things to know before the event.
Practice Excellent Communication Skills
New York Fashion Week is your time to shine. Your work ethic must be second to none, including practicing your stellar communication skills. Communication between client and stylists are paramount for a successful runway show. If you’re not communicating well, the entire look the designer is trying to achieve could be completely undermined. Arrive to all scheduled calls on time, or even better—early. The night before NYFW isn’t the time to stay out until all hours and show up late. Organize your workspace before and during the event. Good communication also requires being responsive to calls, texts, and emails before and during the event. NYFW is fun, but very stressful. Don’t add to the stress by not getting back to your team promptly.
Be Mindful of Timelines
Perfection is a must at NYFW, but that doesn’t mean you have time to redo your work. Runway shows follow a strict timeline and can’t be held up due to a makeup or hair disaster. Practice your looks before the big day as a way to avoid experimentation. The backstage is a hectic environment and each model must be worked on quickly and efficiently.
Organization is Key
Makeup artists must be prepared if they want to succeed at NYFW. Missing brushes and products doesn’t showcase your professionalism. Bring the right kit and pack everything you need for backstage ahead of time. Don’t wait until that morning to get your kit ready. Review the palettes you have packed to confirm you have the best colors for your clients. Sanitize all of your brushes ahead of time as well as keep everything sanitary during NYFW. Although you’ll feel rushed backstage, maintain an organized kit. Stay focused and envision yourself as the calm in the chaotic storm of NYFW.
