DIY Facial techniques are trending all over social media lately. One of these techniques that you may have seen is the facial tool called “gua sha” stones. This is not a new trend however, the gua sha stone has been around for centuries originating from traditional Chinese medicine. Let’s dive into exactly what gua sha is, and how it can benefit your skin in a variety of ways.
Gua Sha Techniques
In performing gua sha either on yourself or on a client, the technique uses a flat stone about the size of the palm to massage the facial muscles and tone your skin. This encourages blood flow and improves circulation in the skin creating a healthy glow. Sometimes gua sha is also performed on the neck and shoulder areas because it helps to relieve muscle tension. It’s important to note that gua sha is used more gently on the face area.
The gua sha stone can be made of different materials, but the most common are jade, rose quartz, or amethyst. No matter what it’s made of, the stone tool has rounded edges that contours your facial bone structure effortlessly.
Benefits of Gua Sha
Some of the benefits of gua sha, when performed on a regular basis, is that it reduces puffiness in the face and around the eye area. It also lifts the look of your skin by improving the natural contours of your face. Finally, it can stimulate beneficial collagen production for more youthful looking skin and reducing fine lines.
When gua sha is used properly, you’ll notice an immediate difference in the skin, but the results will last for at least a week. To continue to see results, this process must be performed weekly. With repeated treatments, you will see improvements with collagen production, look of fine lines and wrinkles and making them less noticeable. Some refer to this treatment as the Eastern Botox facial, a non-invasive alternative!
