If you have been on Instagram at all in the last year, then you’ve likely at least heard of microblading. Microblading is the latest craze in the world of brow beauty and is rapidly becoming a “must have service”. Microblading in the hands of a well trained tech, can give you the appearance of fuller and thicker eyebrows that won’t rub off or swim off. And the best news about microblading is the results can last up to three years depending on your lifestyle and skin type!
So, What Exactly is Microblading?
Microblading is a form of Permanent Makeup that is done using a hand tool. Cosmetic pigments are implanted into the upper layers of skin and through careful healing techniques, the pigment is healed into the skin which give the appearance of fuller brows. The Microblading procedure typically runs between 2 to 3 hours, with the prep and mapping often taking more time than the actual blading! The first step is topical numbing of the client. While the numbing takes place, the client is consulted as to the shape and style of her “dream brows”, and medical paperwork is filled out. Once the consultation is over, the skin will be cleaned and brows are mapped out to determine which areas are in need of pigment. Once the client gives the “go-ahead, the procedure can begin!
The Beauty of Microblading
Although the service is called micro “blading”, the technician doesn’t actually use a blade. The hand tool used, has a configuration of tiny needles in either a straight line or a cluster, which are dipped in pigment and deposited directly into the top layers of the skin. Although microblading is frequently described as “Semi Permanent, it is still classified as a tattoo even though the needles don’t go as deep into the skin as a tattoo gun.
After Care and Follow up
Microblading requires a technician with a lot of skill and an artist’s eye- however- the way you take care of your brows until they heal can be even more important to the finished results! Brows should be kept dry for at least a week after the initial microblading session. This includes not working out or sweating, washing your face or using popular anti-aging skin care products! Perspiration washes the pigment from the strokes, and active skin care products can cause the results to be blurry or bleached out.
Side effects are minimal as long as the brows are kept meticulously clean and dry, however some clients may feel itching and irritation while the brows heal. Brow color will also change and soften during this period. By the fourth week after treatment, both the brow shape and color will be able to be evaluated.
Microblading is usually considered complete after two appointments. A follow-up is scheduled about six weeks after the initial treatment, to check how the strokes have healed and to add in additional strokes if needed.
