Throughout history, women have shown their strength, ingenuity, and creativity — even in the darkest of times. Although this Women’s History Month has been unfortunately marked with the dark cloud of a pandemic, it’s now more important than ever to remember the tenacity and determination of women to rise above.
With this in mind, let’s take a look at these amazing, inspiring women in the beauty industry.
Estée Lauder
You’ve surely seen her makeup counters in department stores, but you may not have realized that Estée Lauder was actually a real person. Born Josephine Esther Mentzer and originally from Queens, Estée learned about the beauty business from her uncle who was a chemist with his own beauty product company. As an adult, she began her own perfume brand with her husband and later went on to sell makeup and other beauty products as a highly successful businesswoman.
Coco Chanel
If you want to talk about overcoming adversity as a woman, look no further than Coco Chanel. Born in France as Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, the woman who would later found one of the most stunning and notable brands in the high-end fashion industry was actually born to a traveling salesman and a laundrywoman and later raised in an orphanage. Later, she would make her name as a hat maker and go on to found the House of Chanel.
Elizabeth Arden
Another brand you’re probably familiar with, Elizabeth Arden was founded by none other than Elizabeth Arden (AKA: Florence Nightingale Graham). Graham was born in Canada but made her fortune as a beauty industry titan after she moved to Manhattan. There, she worked in the E.E. Squibb Pharmaceuticals Company and learned all about skincare. She would later take this information and use it to create a line of fashionable beauty products for women. Many people credit Arden with making makeup a mainstay for stylish, ladylike women.
