Botox has lost the negative stigma it once had and has become the latest trend in facial modifications and aging preventatives. This past Wednesday, November 16th, was National Botox day and if you decided to take advantage of the holiday and get a few injections, more power to you. As estheticians, we are not legally permitted to offer Botox injections… but that does not mean we aren’t able to offer Botox alternatives 😏.
In this blog, we cover skin care treatments and products that will help you achieve firmer, smoother, and younger-looking skin without the syringe.
Microcurrent Facial Therapy
Microcurrent facials have been nicknamed the “non-invasive face lift”. A microcurrent facial is a skin care treatment in which a water-based gel is applied to the skin then a hand-held device is used to deliver low-grade electrical currents into facial muscles and skin cells. These currents build the muscles in the face, making the face appear tighter and firmer. Microcurrent stimulation can also increase blood circulation which gives the skin a natural healthy glow and plumpness. Much like Botox, these currents help keep the skin lifted BUT will allow mobility of the muscles—unlike Botox. Microcurrent services are performed by licensed estheticians and can be a great alternative.
Topical Ingredients
There are many topical ingredients in skin creams, serums, and lotions that have anti-aging and firming effects. Ingredients like retinol, vitamin C, and hyaluronic acid are all ingredients that can diminish fine lines and wrinkles and make the skin appear younger.
Retinol is a form of vitamin A that increases cell production and slows the breakdown of collagen. With cells being able to regenerate quicker, the skin becomes more elastic, and the appearance of fine lines diminishes. It is best to use retinol at night, as it increases sensitivity to sunlight.
For daytime use, vitamin C is another way to keep the skin firm and more youthful. It is full of nourishing antioxidants that increase collagen production and keeps the skin taut. These benefits can be seen in the skin through consistent daily use of vitamin C over the span of two to three months.
Hyaluronic acid is naturally produced in the body and is what helps skin stretch. When applied externally, it can keep the skin hydrated and plump. Over time, hyaluronic acid will aid in keeping the skin supple and elastic which will counteract any formation of fine lines and wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid is versatile and able to be used with all skin types and any time of day.
