It’s understandable if skincare is the last thing on your mind these days, especially when you’re not seeing very many people in person. But in some ways, many of us are more in the spotlight than ever — yet without access to the professional treatments and products we’ve always relied on.
Zoom In?
Whether you’re doing FaceTime with your crush or attending a Zoom meeting, catching a glimpse of yourself in the inset window can be jarring. Between the harsh lighting and unflattering angles that many home setups entail, modern technology has a way of “zooming in” on complexion issues.
Of course, you can’t magically erase all of these unflattering factors, but it certainly helps to start out without bags under your eyes, blotchy skin and lines that seem deeper than they were pre-quarantine.
Trapped Without Safety Nets
Now more than ever, many of us understand the role professional treatments like microdermabrasion, thermage, and spa-level facials play in helping our skin turn the corner from problematic to glowing.
Another cosmetic bummer during lockdown? Often, access to our favorite makeup and skincare products become more challenging. While mail order is still an option, your “emergency glam kit” may not arrive before that crucial online appointment.
How to Keep it Cute
Here are a few tips to stay glowing, for both virtual and real-life encounters:
- Stock up on sure things. Make sure you have enough of your “old reliables,” whether they come by Instacart or Amazon. This isn’t the time to be running out of the toner or moisturizer that you know delivers good results.
- Try home remedies. If you’ve never been the DIY type when it comes to skincare, this is a good time to check out yogurt facials and cucumber slice “eye masks.” They can fill in the gaps if you run out of brand-name products.
- Stick to a routine. A daily routine of gentle cleansing and toning, along with applications of serum and moisturizer, only takes a few minutes. And because days are running together for most people, marking your calendar so you don’t forget weekly and bi-weekly masks and/or peels on is a good idea.
- Keep your habits healthy. As tempting as it is to let junk food and late-night Netflix binging carry you through quarantine, those habits can wreak havoc on your complexion. Save the indulgences for occasional cheat days.
