The modern-day barbershop isn’t the same “cut and a shave” establishment your grandpa might have frequented. Today, barbershops still offer haircuts and shaves, of course, but you’re also more likely to find services like facials and body treatments there.
This shift in how barbershops do business is taking place right now, with demand for male-centered spa services rising by the month. As a result, now is the ideal time to add these treatments to your skillset, especially if working in a barbershop is something you’re interested in.
We recommend focusing on the following treatments during your training and education. Having these under your belt will make you a hot commodity when it comes time to look for a job.
Facials
While most people associate facials with female beauty regimens, they’re just as beneficial for men.
There are all different types of facials. However, most follow a routine pattern — namely: Cleanse, analyze, steam, exfoliate, massage, mask, final product application.
In addition to being an amazing routine for restoring the skin, facials are also ultra-relaxing. Men, too, enjoy the calming sensation of a facial massage, the soothing scents of the products being used, and the feeling of being pampered.
Waxings
Like women, many men want to go hairless on certain parts of their bodies too! Common waxing sites for men include the chest, stomach, shoulders, back, and arms. Because male body hair is often thicker and coarser than female body hair, it takes special training to succeed with this skill.
Body Treatments
There are a variety of body treatments that might interest male barbershop clients. Like facials, body treatments offer both practical solutions to common skin problems and relaxation.
Some of the body treatments we train our students in at NYIB (and offer to clients at our spa) include:
- Back Treatment
- Cellulite & Firming Treatment with Sea Body Mud
- Detoxifying Treatment with BlackBaltic Mud
- Micro-Buff Body Polish
