There’s no doubt 2020 was a tough year for everyone. If you were a student earning your certification, you may have had to put your plans on hold. Seasoned Stylists, Makeup Artists, and Estheticians may have lost clients, income — and even their entire businesses. Undoubtedly, those new to the industry, who were just getting their start, had it hard as well. In short, each of us could probably wax poetic on all the things that changed drastically in our lives due to the pandemic.

Still, at New York Institute of Beauty, we believe in the power of looking forward. There’s a strength in learning from the past but refusing to dwell — instead, choosing to focus on what we can do in the present to better ourselves in the future.

So, what is it that you’re looking forward to?

Setting goals for the future is something that everyone can do. No matter where you are on your life journey, you always have the ability to set goals and work toward them.

With all of the challenges that the last year has thrown at us, it can be easy to forget this. One thing that can help is realizing that your goals are probably more within your reach than you think.

For example, did you know that if you enrolled in our esthetics course right now, you could feasibly be entering the workforce as an Esthetician by the summer?

This is absolutely possible. Still, many people only dream of this and other goals. They don’t take those critical first steps because the path to success seems long and arduous. Of course, the keyword here is “seems.” Your goals are attainable, but you are the one who has to be convinced. Remember:

Setting SMART Goals

No matter what goal(s) you have, it’s best to use the SMART way of setting them up. This means making each one of your goals:

  • Specific (Don’t aim for something vague such as, “I want to be an Esthetician some day.” Make it more precise)
  • Measurable (Be able to measure how well you’re doing)
  • Achievable (Aim high, but remember that wanting to make a living as an Esthetician is achievable; wanting to be a millionaire right off the bat is not)
  • Relevant (Know how your goal links to your happiness and success in life)
  • Time-based (Don’t be too general about your timeline; have set times for when you’re going to achieve each part of your goal)
