So, you’ve decided to become an esthetician and you’ve been looking at potential schools to attend. This can be both exciting, but also give you some nervous feelings. It’s like buying a car, will it fulfill your needs? Will you get you from point A to point B safely?

The big question is, what is the criteria you should be looking for?

Certainly, its important to find a school where you feel comfortable — a place where they offer flexible scheduling, where you like the instructors, and where the programs align with your goals.

But theres something else you should be on the lookout for as well: State-approval.

What Does It Mean for a Program to Be State Approved?

When a beauty school or beauty program is state approved, it means that the school or program meets the states education performance standards. These standards are usually established by another accreditation party (a third party) who evaluates and rates each beauty program in the state.

While it’s true that an unapproved beauty program can still be good, choosing an approved program further ensures you’ll be able to pass your licensing exams once you finish school. It means that all of the curriculum covered by the exams will be covered at the school. Most importantly, if you do not go to a state accredited school with a state approved curriculum, you will not qualify to sit for the state board to get a license. This is crucial as you’ll need at least one license to work as an esthetician in your state.

Another reason students gravitate toward state-approved schools is that they can usually transfer their credits and hours to another state-approved school should they need to. This is useful for some students who plan on moving or need to change schools for another reason.

Finally, if a student requires financial aid in order to attend school, federal higher education funding can only be obtained through a state-approved school. Incoming students will be able to fill out and submit a FAFSA (Free Applications for Federal Student Aid) form and will qualify for grants, scholarships, and other loans — all of which can help them afford school.
