For beauty students, with their natural inclination to socialize and to be hands-on helpers, our current period of social distancing brings unique challenges. Here are a few ways to keep yourself engaged in your field — as well as keep your morale up — while you’re stuck indoors.
Get Glam for Dial-ins
Whether it’s a virtual “champagne brunch” with your friends or FaceTiming with your crush, try to schedule a few video chats with the outside world each week. And just as you wouldn’t show up for real-life events without putting on your face, use the opportunity to do your hair, nails and makeup for these video chats.
And, of course, knowing that you’ll be having these chats will give you that extra motivation to follow all the steps of your usual skincare routine!
You can also use these scheduled virtual visits as an excuse to keep tweaking different makeup ideas, whether it’s a new brow shape or a concealer you haven’t tried yet.
Brush Up Via Online Classes
If your own instructors aren’t providing online classes, there’s certainly no shortage of tutorials available on YouTube — starting with NYIB’s own channel, of course!
Obviously, some YouTube channels should be taken with a grain of salt, especially for issues like skincare. But for fun ideas on nail techniques or a new twist on the French braid, cruising the web for beauty tips via video and posts can keep the inspiration flowing!
This is also a great time to learn about what makeup trips work best for video conferencing, as opposed to Instagram poses or real life. For many people, a bold lip and a bit of shimmer on the cheekbones might make more of a difference on video than the usual contouring tricks.
Offer Virtual Consultations
BuzzFeed News recently reported that licensed estheticians have begun supplementing their income during social distancing by offering “virtual skincare consultations.” Clients use their phone or laptop cameras to show these house-bound professionals close-ups of their area of concern, from acne and flaking to scars and dark marks, and explain what they’ve tried so far.
While beauty students can’t boast their professional credentials, they can emulate the idea as a way of gaining experience and helping others at the same time. Consider offering your expertise to your circle of friends on a volunteer basis.
This practice enables you to examine real-world issues that different people have, from uneven pigmentation to mature skin. You might even research time-tested home remedies for beauty issues for people who can’t get to the stores for their usual products.
