As you reach the end of your training program, it is time to turn your attention to getting a job in the related field. In most cases you will need to submit a resume to potential employers in order to line up interviews. If this resume doesn’t make a good first impression, you may miss out on some of the best available positions. Below are some tips to help you prepare a solid resume and maximize your chances of getting a good job.
1. Know the key parts of a resume.
Every resume should have the same basic structure so that it’s as easy as possible for a potential employer to review. In general, your resume should have your contact information, career summary, information about your education, experience, licensure, and certifications.
2. Don’t make it too lengthy.
If you have an extensive history to report, it may be tempting to include all of these details on resume. However, if your resume is too long, potential employers are less likely to read through everything and more likely to overlook you. Instead of detailing your entire history, focus on the most important information and try to keep your entire resume around one page in length.
3. Check your grammar.
Although grammar may not be the most important skill for most careers, poor grammar will still impact your ability to get a job. If your resume contains spelling and/or grammatical errors, you will look less professional. Make sure your resume is free of these errors before you begin distributing it.
4. Highlight your skills and training.
One of the most important things any potential employer will look for in a new esthetician or makeup artist is his or her skills. Be sure to include detailed information about the training you have received, all of your unique skills and any relevant experience you have. If you are applying for a position where portfolio work is important, such as a makeup artist, include your website and social media links.
5. Ask for help.
In many cases, an unbiased observer will be able to find errors or deficiencies on your resume that you couldn’t see on your own. Ask peers and advisors to read over your resume and provide you with feedback that you can use to make improvements.
