The runways of New York, Milan, London and Paris were filled with an artistic voice in makeup applications this season. The upcoming fall is all about being an individual; presented with a common thread of being different, being yourself, and being proud of it. Kathleen Hou, writer for the The Cut a New York Magazine publication, says: “ ‘Sexiness,’ or the suggestion of it, was nonexistent in backstage beauty looks, but maybe that’s the mood in a post-pussy-grabbing Trump world”

So what does this mean, and what do we have to look forward to? Three main looks; The Minimalistic, Dramatic Eyes and Deep Red Lips.

The statement that goes with minimalistic makeup is “beauty is natural” – it is the “unnoticeable” makeup. The two big names that presented this look were Calvin Klein and Fendi. This meant clean complexions were the name of the game, using hydrating creams and highlighters.

Pat McGrath perfected this look with just a touch here and there. For Calvin Klein she used the minimalistic style with silver powder on the corners of the eyes. She made a serious impression with the minimalistic look and the bold brow seen on the Loewe runway. She explains how she created the look in an article by Monica Kim with Vogue: “It’s all based on a very, very strong, beautiful brow…”

From sharp lines to bold shapes, and colors; These eyes have it for this season’s runway. Diane Kendal gave us a unique twist on the Cat Eye with colors such as blue, green, orange, and red, and geometric shapes on the Prabal Gurung runway. We witnessed the new punk makeup by Val Garland in Vivienne Westwood’s show.  Or what about those bold eyelashes on Gigi Hadid?

Artistic statements were also seen with dramatic eyes. It is rumored that makeup artist Polly Osmond used his talents to make a political statement on Christian Siriano’s runway. The coppery glitter dripped from the model’s eyes like tears.

If lipstick was seen on this season’s runway it was usually in a deep or muted red. As seen on  runways for Jenny Packham, La Perla, Adam and Philipp Plein.

Where Pat McGrath used the minimalistic look on half the models, she gave the other half deep red lips to match a reverse red eyeliner.

You also had to love the deep red look that makeup artist Erin Parsons created for Alice + Olivia. That color was such a grown up sexy.

Overall the fall 2017 season should be exciting in makeup and we expect to see some statements being made. 2016 was about making a statement with the color of your hair – bright pinks and blues, along with whites. This year should be about making a statement with your choice of makeup – minimal with a bold flair to punctuate that statement.
