Fashion Week to makeup artists, hairstylists and fashionistas is equivalent to the World Series for baseball players, the Olympics to an athlete and the Academy Awards to an actor. It is the biggest and most important week of a designer’s career. At the show the energy is incredible, the crowd is eager and the press is anxious. Although that all sounds amazing, imagine what it is like BEHIND the scenes. To me, that’s where the magic takes place. Being an avid fashion follower, my dream has always been to go behind the scenes and watch as everyone prepares for those 15 seconds of fame. With the NYIB Makeup team, my dreams came true as I had the opportunity to be in charge of NYIB’s social media for the day at the Grungy Gentleman Fashion show this past February at NYFW.
Although this was my first show behind the scenes at fashion week, I have been following designers, trends and fashion shows for as long as I can remember. Being a Fashion Institute of Technology Alumni, I know how important the cosmetic industry is to the fashion Industry. They are one in the same, meaning, one would not exist without the other. The cosmetic trends are based off of the runways. It’s the trickledown effect in the sense that each category of fashion is directly affected by the other. The trends even branch their way into menswear. I have always been super attracted to menswear. Even while I was attending design school, a lot of my work was based off of men’s fashion. That being said, it was a no brainer when I was asked to participate at the Grungy Gentleman show. Not to mention there were celebrities walking in the show. Ever hear of Eric Decker of the Jets? Chris Weidman, UFC Fighter? JT Thomas of the Giants? Rapper Jim Jones or Rapper Mack Wilds? If any of those names give you school-girl excitement, then you understand why I was ecstatic to be backstage and interact with these hunks; as well as the slew of male models, hosts and others.
The NYIB Makeup team did such an incredible job getting everyone ready and prepared for the show. Believe it or not, the male models were very particular about their hair and makeup. It was interesting to see how they interacted with our makeup artists and hairstylists. Some were more serious and focused on the show, and others were taking selfies and requesting our team on Instagram and Snapchat (follow us if you haven’t already). One of the most memorable moments for me, (besides getting to speak to Eric Decker, I’m a huge Jets fan), was to watch one of our NYIB Makeup Team member cover and conceal all of Chris Weidman (UFC champion) scars and bruises. From countless fights and injuries, he had many scars. Our NYIB Makeup Artist was thrilled for the challenge. Even Chris Weidman was impressed by her talent.
“It’s Game Time” shouts designer Jace Lipstein and everyone filed into their order to begin the show. Touch ups were complete, hair was in place and outfits were fitted to perfection. At this point I was standing at the top of the runway, so eager for the show to begin. For designers, fashion shows are equivalent to walking/live art galleries. It’s a chance to experiment take risks and truly a great way to take your work to the next level. I made friends with the DJ and he allowed me to stand close by so I could get really great shots of the runway. Anxiously waiting, I see country singer and wife of Eric Decker, Jesse James Decker walk in and take her seat in the front row. If that wasn’t enough, next walks in the star of Pitch Perfect Skylar Astin. Skylar Astin’s real last name is Lipstein, he is the brother of Jace who is the designer of Grungy Gentleman. CAN YOU SAY FAMILY AFFAIR!?
The energy in the room was unreal. The loft was packed, the bass from the music made the room vibrate and the buzz of conversation starting simmering down as the DJ announced the show would be starting in 5. Everyone shuffled to their seats, the lights dimmed and the music got louder. The lights centered on the runway and the models started walking. Each one had a different way of conquering the runway. Some had a smoldering look and stone face and others had fun by tossing their hair and giving the paparazzi a smile. It seemed like the show flashed by in only a few seconds. I was so busy snapping pictures and videos, I didn’t realize how quickly it all happened. As the show wrapped up, everyone moved to the other side of the loft for drinks or made their way downtown to the after party.
As we were finishing up and gathering our things, we were able to interact with the models and celebrities on a more personal basis. Now that the tension of the show was over, it was easier to have conversation. JT Thomas of the Giants was awesome. He signed hats, took pictures and even followed us on Instagram! Chris Weidman had his adorable kids there and introduced us to his family. Jessie James Decker and Eric Decker even went as far posing with an NYIB Makeup Team sweatshirt!
The experience at the Grungy Gentleman show was one that could never be duplicated. I still look back on the images and videos and feel grateful for having the opportunity to work with such an amazing team! #NYIBforlife
