In a recent interview with Alexandra Darilas, a beauty school graduate, she shared with us just what drew her to the Esthetics field and why the New York Institute of Beauty was her top pick. With a background in bioscience and business management, beauty school didn’t seem to be in the cards for Alexandra. However, she always found something lacking in the finance field and decided to take a chance by enrolling at the New York Institute of Beauty.
“Something missing for me…”
Although Alexandra Darilas was in finance for more than a decade, she realized it was time for a change. She was afraid to make a change because finance seemed like the more sensible choice. However, after a tour at Tommy Hilfiger, it was a turning point for her. ”As we were given a tour through the facility, there was a photo shoot going on and there were photographers, hair dressers and makeup artists all present glamming up the models. I remember thinking to myself for a quick second how that could be me doing that models makeup.”
She realized her dream of being within the beauty industry could be a reality. The next step was a no-brainer. As Darilas explained, “From that point on, I knew it was time. I started slowly helping my uncle at his hair salon, getting my feet wet in a new setting on the weekends, and then took on the position full-time as a manager. I remember receiving a pamphlet from NYIB one day, and I literally just made the call. I did not think twice.”
Why Esthetics?
Alexandra Darilas felt drawn to the New York Institute of Beauty because of the comprehensive curriculum offered. The curriculum teaches the skills needed to remain competitive in the field. Subjects within the Esthetics program include infection control, detailed skin assessments and analysis, hair removal techniques, makeup techniques, equipment and safety protocols, business and career skills, along with advanced procedures. Darilas has advanced seamlessly through the programs—first starting with the 600-hour Esthetics program and Beauty Essentials Makeup Course before graduating from the 900-hour Advanced Esthetics Program. Alexandra Darilas is adamant about telling others to understand that life is about taking chances. For her, beauty school gave her renewed purpose and reminded her of the importance of choosing a career that makes you feel passionate about your work. Her advice to those who feel unsure about beauty school: “Get out of your comfort zone and do not be afraid to pursue what you love and what you are passionate about. And believe me, when I say this, it is never too late, no matter what anyone tells you. Just believe in yourself and make that first move.”
